Hospital bills? No worries!

Shakira Hansrod, a GetSavvi Health employee, got the fright of her life when her in-laws called to tell her that her young daughter was in an accident. Shakira agreed to sit down with us and recount the story.

1.) What happened that led to you requiring medical cover?

My daughter ran into the road where a taxi knocked her. There was a mark on her head where she fell and on the hand that she used to break her fall. She was with her grandparents who rushed her to the hospital.

I gave the hospital my medical aid number because I thought it would fall under my medical aid’s hospital plan but they wouldn’t accept it. Then I remembered that my GetSavvi Health has an emergency service. I wasn’t sure what it would cover, so I called them and was told that for hospital admittance, GetSavvi Health would cover up to R100 000, which is great because not even my normal medical aid covers that much. And if they didn’t admit her, GetSavvi Health would cover R5 000.

2.) What happened when you got to the hospital?

My daughter was taken to the trauma unit for X-rays to ascertain that there wasn’t any head injury. I got there after the X-rays because I was at work. She seemed to be fine so they said she could go home and that I had to monitor her.

That night I kept an eye on her for drowsiness, headaches and vomiting. During the night she was fine but the next morning she threw up so I rushed her back to hospital. They then monitored her for the next 12 hours but nothing happened. The doctor said that the vomiting could be that the whole experience was a bit too much for her.

3.) Did GetSavvi Health cover all the costs?

Yes, GetSavvi Health covered everything. I got paid back the full amount within two weeks.

4.) How do you feel about GetSavvi Health medical insurance?

I didn’t realise how much I’d use it besides my daughter’s doctors’ visits. But the biggest thing is that I didn’t know that GetSavvi Health has this emergency service. It came as the biggest blessing because it saved me a few thousand rands that I would’ve had to pay when I took her to hospital. So it was amazing.

5.) Would you recommend GetSavvi Health to family and friends?

After that experience I was actually raving about Getsavvi Health, and also because it’s one of our products. And it’s still affordable. I’ve been encouraging people to sign up. Even if you have a medical aid with savings, those savings get used up so quickly, so I think GetSavvi Health insurance actually works hand-in-hand with medical aid.

6.) How do you feel about the whole experience?

I think it was the scariest, to receive a phone call like that. I can’t even describe it, and then it just gives you a wake-up call. Because if you have a sick child - you don’t know what can happen. And you can’t pay out of your pocket so I don’t think you can do without medical cover.

At GetSavvi Heatlth we’re all so relieved that Shakira’s daughter wasn’t seriously hurt. And that her GetSavvi Health medical insurance acted like a safety net to cover her medical expenses when she needed it.
