Ever been in bed for hours scrolling TikTok or InstaReels and time flies by?
If yes, you’re not alone. This is what's been termed as doomscrolling. Doomscrolling is when you keep scrolling through content that makes you anxious, sad, or stressed, and you just can’t seem to stop.
It’s called “doomscrolling” because the content tends to be gloomyheadlines about disasters, conflicts, or personal drama.
The more you scroll, the more your brain wants to keep scrolling.
Why Do We Doomscroll?
- It’s addictive: Our brains crave updates and notifications.
- We want to stay informed: Especially when something feels urgent.
- It feels productive: Even if it really isn’t.
- It gives us a sense of control: Knowing what’s happening, even if it’s negative.
How to Break the Cycle
- Set time limits on apps or news sites.
- Take breaks: go for a walk or make a cup of tea.
- Follow positive content to balance the negative.
- Be mindful: Ask yourself, “Will reading this help me?”
Doomscrolling isn’t inherently bad. It only becomes a problem when it starts affecting your mood, sleep, or daily life. The key is awareness, once you notice the habit, you can start scrolling smarter.
