Kids gain so much from school, like how to read and write, be creative and even socially interact with others. However, there can be a few risks while leaving them at school. Follow these easy tips to keep your little ones healthy and safe.

It’s important to instil and follow basic health and safety habits like these:

1. Washing hands!

Schools can become a breeding ground for germs and viruses. These nasties can easily be passed between learners and may cause kids to get sick.
This might be one of the most basic tips, but it’s one of the most effective ways of curbing the spread of bugs. Teach your kids from a young age to regularly and thoroughly wash their hands throughout the day, especially after using the bathroom, before eating and after blowing their nose or coughing into their hand.

2. Healthy diet

Your child’s diet can either enhance or lower their immune system. A diet high in sugar and processed foods like chips and soft drinks can leave their immune system compromised and vulnerable to disease. A balanced diet with plenty of fruits and vegetables (with a sweet only every now and then) can build their immune system, allowing it to beat whatever comes its way.

3. Let them stay home when sick

If your little one happens to have picked up a bug and is feeling sick, let them stay home. This not only allows their bodies to rest and fight off whatever is making them sick, but it prevents the bug from spreading to others and eventually reinfect your child. Stop the cycle of the bug spreading through the classroom by getting rid of it at home.

4. Talk to them about safety

Getting sick isn’t the only danger when sending your kids to school. If they’re old enough, teach them about basic safety rules like:

- Not to cross the road without the help of an elder;
- Not to talk to strangers and to report strange behaviour; and
- Avoid going close to bodies of water or fire.
