Ever wondered what the number of the Sun Protection Factor (SPF) on a bottle of sunscreen means? We’ve pondered that too, that’s why we looked it up.

Sun protective wear like sunscreen and sun protective hats should be high up on the list of most important things to pack in your bag this holidays. However, buying sunscreen and wondering what level of SPF you’ll need shouldn’t be a daunting task.

SPF numbers explained:

Sunscreen is used to block the ultraviolet (UV) light emitted from the sun. This UV light is extremely harmful to our skins and can cause sun damage. The two different types of UV light given off by the sun are:

SPF numbers refer to the amount of time (in minutes) it would take for your skin type to burn in the sun. For example, if your skin burns in the sun after 10 minutes, then applying an SPF 15 would, in theory, allow you to stay in the sun without getting burned for 150 minutes (10 x 15 = 150).

It’s important to note that this is only an estimate and can differ depending on your skin type, the intensity of the sun and how much you sweat.
