New Year’s To Dos for a Happy and Healthy You

Lifestyle & Fitness • by Ryno Ellis • 12 December 2017

 New year - New you

Don’t start the year with unreachable or unrealistic resolutions. We all know they won’t stick in the long haul. Rather start simple with easy and attainable goals.

Making massive declarations like “this year I’m losing weight” or “this year I’m exercising more” aren’t specific enough to help you stick to them. And you might be setting yourself up for failure.

For a year blessed with good health and prosperity, we’ve put together a list of attainable tips and tricks you can do that’ll pack a huge punch.

Cut down on sugar – you’re sweet enough

If there’s only one thing you want to accomplish this year, then let it be to eat less sugar. Sugar is evil!

A diet high in sugar can lead to obesity, diabetes, tooth decay and heart disease.
Sugar can be found in everything from a can of coke to a bottle of tomato sauce and even bread.

Start small by simply cutting down on sweets, sugary drinks and cooking sauce. Be more aware of what’s inside your food by checking the ingredient lists. Also, replace sugar with alternatives like Xylitol which is much lower in calories.

Beware as sugar also has many different aliases and can be found in ingredient items listed as sucrose, high-fructose corn syrup, barley malt, dextrose, maltose and also rice syrup. Be on the lookout for these before you put any grocery items in your shopping trolley.

Take a breather

Life is a rush. Juggling work, responsibilities and technology every day can quickly take it’s toll on your body.

Take time for yourself, even if it’s only five minutes, to forget about all the interferences.

Many people use this short period to meditate, think of things they’re thankful for, pray or simply take deep breaths. No matter what you do during this time, just make sure you do it every day. It’ll help you stay sane and in the moment.

Move more – even if it’s only a little bit more

This is the most famous resolution of them all: exercising. But, when we say exercise, then we mean only a little until you’re able to do more.

Starting small with a 30-minute walk each day will cut your chances of heart disease and diabetes.

By starting small you allow your body to adapt and want more. Soon you’ll want to do more like walk for an hour and do 10 minutes of lunges. Trust us!

Plan ahead

Let this quote sink in: “Failing to prepare is preparing to fail.”

Planning is key to a less stressed you in the future. This goes for all parts of your personal and professional life.

Write and leave lists at the office and on your fridge to help you remember things. Prep healthy meals in advance to stick to your diet plan. Plan ahead when you’ll be taking time to exercise during the week.

By implementing only one of these a month, it’ll be smooth sailing for the year ahead.

Good luck and have a happy and healthy new year!
