Summertime Sadness: COVID-19 and the Holiday Season

Health • by Paul De Beyer • 02 November 2021

We’re about to enter our second full holiday season of lockdown during the COVID-19 pandemic, and we’ve all got some concerns.

Things like: will the beaches be open? Will we need to be home and in bed by 9pm? Can we buy some wine for dinner? And, most of all: will we be able to visit family and friends, or be stuck in yet another strict lockdown?

Is COVID-19 seasonal?

By seasonal, we don’t mean it comes in waves. That, after all those family meetings on Sunday nights with Uncle Cyril, we know for a fact. But do warm seasons, like summer, have an impact on the spread of the coronavirus?

Unfortunately, the facts seem to indicate that warmer weather doesn’t truly impact the spread of the coronavirus. However, there is one thing about summer that does have a direct influence on the spread of COVID-19 – spending time outside.

We all know that social distancing and mask-wearing helps stop the spread of COVID-19, but the fact that we’re able to spend time outside and not in enclosed spaces does have an impact on the rate of transmission.

The majority of infections take place in enclosed spaces with poor ventilation. The direct opposite to the great outdoors!

Does that mean the sun kills the virus?

Actually, yes it does. Unlike us, COVID-19 particles can’t put on sunscreen before going outside, and those UV rays that burn us each summer will kill those virus particles.

As the majority of transmission occurs indoors, simply being outside in an open air space immediately, and dramatically, drops your chances of getting the virus.

Hooray! I can ditch my mask!

No, definitely not. As much as we’d all like to ditch our masks for summer, we need to stay vigilant. Just because the weather got nicer doesn’t mean that the old rules suddenly don’t apply. Therefore, you should still:

  1. Wear your mask when possible
  2. Wash your hands regularly, for at least 20 seconds with soap
  3. Keep social distancing
  4. Cough or sneeze into a bent elbow
  5. Avoid crowded, enclosed spaces
  6. Get your free COVID-19 vaccine. Click here for more info from the Department of Health on how and where.

We need to continue adhering to these rules, at least until there’s a higher vaccination rate and the majority of people have a higher level of immunity to the disease. Keep your friends and family safe this year, stick to the rules and enjoy being outside!

PS: Don’t forget the sunscreen!

As a GetSavvi Health member, you have access to your FeelBetterFast benefit, where you can consult privately with a nurse or pharmacist at a network pharmacy near you. This means that if you do accidentally forget the sunscreen and get burnt, you can get treated for a minor condition (the nurse or pharmacist will give you a referral if it’s a more serious condition).

If you need more information about FeelBetterFast, simply click here, leave your details and a GetSavvi Health agent will call you back!
