How to Road Trip Safely During COVID-19

Health • by Paul De Beyer • 15 December 2020

Finally, 2020 is nearing an end. It’s almost as if you can hear a global sigh of relief as we kick off this holiday season. Unfortunately, we’re still stuck with the global COVID-19 pandemic, and that means your holiday this year is most likely going to be a little closer to home.

If you’re lucky enough to get the chance to travel a bit this December, you’re probably doing it by car. With many places around the world instituting new lockdown regulations, local travel is more common at the moment. And this means more road trips, and road trips can be great fun.

To make sure you stay safe this festive season, here are a few tips and tricks to enjoy your end-of-year road trip.

Planning makes perfect!

While it sounds like the most obvious thing to do when going on holiday, COVID-19 means you need to dive a little deeper into your planning. As hotspots pop up, you’ll need to keep yourself up to date with the latest local restrictions.

So how do you do this?

Plan your route to avoid areas that are higher risk than others.
Make sure you have enough snacks and drinks to avoid stopping at shops.
Check to see if all the tourist attractions or places of interest you want to visit on your trip are open at the moment.
Make sure you’ve got maps so you can avoid asking for directions. Try downloading the maps you need to your phone so you can avoid a hefty data bill.

Get serviced!

Before setting out on any long drive, it’s a good idea to get your oil, water and tyres checked. But, with COVID-19 around, booking a full service should be top of your to-do list. Bookings for services can be delayed due to reduced workers at the service center, and this could result in a later date than you had planned. Also, if your car were to break down on your trip, you could be stuck in an area you didn’t plan on staying in for longer than usual as parts and transport routes are still returning to normal.

Get prepped!

Here are a few COVID-19 essentials we think you should definitely have with you on your holiday road trip:
