5 Bad habits that drive your dentist crazy

Health • by Ryno Ellis • 25 September 2018
Most people dread going to the dentist, but have you ever stopped to think that sometimes your dentist dreads seeing you?

Imagine having to stare into a stranger’s mouth right after a meal or having a cigarette. Doesn’t seem fun does it?

Here are five things you might be doing that could drive your dentist up the wall.

1 Not brushing before your appointment

Seems obvious, but many people go straight to the dentist’s chair without cleaning first. Your dentist might not say anything but staring at a piece of lettuce you had earlier that day could potentially ruin their day. So brush before!

2 Smoking

Smoking is not only bad for your general health but it wreaks havoc on your teeth and gums. Cigarette smoke causes bad breath, stained teeth, gum disease and is even linked to oral cancer. That’s why, if you care about your pearly whites staying that way, put down that cigarette as soon as possible.

3 Avoiding your dentist

General upkeep is key to having healthy gums and teeth. There’s nothing a dentist dreads more than hearing that you haven’t been to a dentist’s office in more than five years. Check in with your dentist at least once every year to ensure that everything is in good shape.

4 Consuming soft drinks

Soft drinks might seem innocent but they’re literally like acid to your teeth. The high sugar content from sodas like Coca-Cola and Cream Soda causes acid to break down your teeth’s enamel layer. That’s why your dentist will suggest avoiding sugary drinks or brushing afterwards if you do have a drink.

5 Not flossing

If you’re not flossing then what are you doing with your life? Jokes aside, your dentist doesn’t tell you to floss just for fun. Flossing correctly and frequently can help remove decaying food between your teeth, beat bad breath and keep your gums healthy. There’s no reason why flossing shouldn’t be part of your daily routine.

There you have it. Now try and stick to these five habits. Then you’ll probably keep your dentist happy when they see you next time.
